Sounds like some lame are southern mom crap to me, OP. Since you asked. Are these the same moms that try to socially engineer their daughters groups, and act surprised when that crap blows up in their face? Wow.

Nope. Don't even speak that over us. We moved to DC from the deepest of the deep South. I'm very much a southern mom. In a zillion years I wouldn't decorate a kid's locker, nor do I know anyone who would. I would probably help them buy some tacky locker stuff if they wanted it. But no way would I decorate a locker. I didn't even know where my kids' lockers were. Most southern moms foster independence, almost to a fault. This hovering nonsense belongs to DC mom's.

But who would put a chandelier in a walk-in closet? Is that a thing now, too?

Of course. Don’t you watch HGTV? Or Bravo?

Seriously? This sounds like a bunch of New Age-y mumbo-jumbo. "Sense of ownership over their surroundings? What does that even MEAN? It's their locker. It's their. They'll feel ownership. Done. Not everything has to be overdone-done-done to the hilt. This is ridiculous.

This is the mom who will trick out her DD's college dorm room to look like a child's bedroom, all in the name of it being a "small, fun thing to do."

Are these locker/cubby decorating moms judging you for not decorating your son’s locker? Probably not. Grow up and find something real to get worked up about.

Exactly, either do it if you like that kind of thing or don't. Do what you want. Maybe your kid really wants it, maybe they don't care. It really isn't something to stress about. Personally, I am totally jealous that locker chandeliers didn't exist when I was a teen because that would have been awesome.

Like, totally! Rad awesome!

Those chandeliers aren't too expensive but they would take up a fair amount of real estate in a small locker. Instead of an upper shelf for lunch, extra school supplies, etc.....you would have a chandelier.

I would do it if it was a thing and my kid had a locker. And I live in the dc area and am a full time working mom and have never lived in the south.

And decorate her first cubicle and plan DD’s entire wedding and commandeer DD’s eventually baby registry...

This is why they have Bring Your Parents to Work Day now.

Ugh. My company just did this!! Insanity!!

I am one of those moms lol!! Actually, the first day of school, I didn't realize DD had a locker until I got there and saw all the kids with their stuff. Yes, moms were wallpapering and even putting carpet and chandeliers in the lockers. Too funny. We quickly went to container store and purchased a shelf and some other magnet decorations because DD wanted them, not because I wanted her to have it. So I would hardly call it helicoptering! FWIW, I have an older kid in HS, and this was never a thing for him.

On behalf of kids with early fall birthdays, I commend you. My birthday was in the second week of school. Every time I started a new school it sucked to pretend I didn’t care that I had no friends who knew it was my birthday.

Weird. We have them in our public ES, which was built in the 60s.

+1. DD is going to 4th, and first thing she did was find her locker during the open house last Thursday. Well, I don't remember her having a locker in K, but I believe starting at 2, or maybe, even at 1st grader, kids do have lockers in the hallway!

I've never heard of parents decorating them for kids, though. Maybe, it's a new trend I'm not aware of.

This ridiculous thread has now managed to piss off southern moms. It’s a classic reminder of how some moms love to judge other moms over stuff that is of no consequence whatsoever. Long live the mommy wars!
