So PP, you are seeking places that are more white and upscale? Is race really that important to you? I’m asking because I’m just shocked by your post (especially in this day and age).

You are exactly the hippy vibe that is embraced and is popular on MV. OP is talking about the fat tattooed guy wearing a tank top that says I flexed and the sleeves fell off who is complaining about the lack of boardwalk.


So why do "trashy people" bother you? Is it because they tend to be overweight and drinking coke directly from the 2l bottle? Or because they drink budweiser? Or they aren't as uptight as you? I really want to know because I was just at the beach, surrounded by people that fit this description and all I can see was they were having a great time.

At least. I grew up going to OCMD from the tristate area and half the families in my neighborhood too (90s)

We are a black MD/PhD couple new to the area. We've been to Rehoboth once before with our toddler, but it seems that the presence of people who look like us is reason for some to avoid the area. We're heading to MV this year instead.


Sorry to derail - I am close with 3 black upper middle class families who all vacation in Martha's Vineyard every summer (not together)...I know it's beautiful but does it have a reputation for being particularly welcoming to black families? Just curious as I don't seem to have any white friends that vacation there and I've always thought of it as the pinnacle of WASPy. Is it because it was the Obama's preferred vacation destination on the east coast that it gained popularity for black families?

PP here. We won’t be in Oak Bluffs, but close by. We’re going with extended family, and friends and neighbors will also be there.

I used to think it was a bit snooty to go there, but after reading a little more of the history, I’m looking forward to it. It'll be nice to relax and not feel conspicuous, as we’ve felt on occasion in other vacation spots as the only visible minorities.

We own a house on Martha’s Vineyard. It isn’t snooty at all. But there aren’t all the trashy people that OP is complaining about. Nantucket is definitely more snobby.

I'm a DP, but I think the "change" in Rehoboth isn't related to color, but perceived socioeconomic status. More directly: white trash covered in piercings and tattoos. 20 years ago, you didn't see that in Rehoboth---you saw it only in OC.

Candidly, it was upscale when the gay community was more heavily present. They seemed to have moved on to other vacation spots.



"They" didnt'- when you say "gay community" you mean middle aged or older, affluent white gay men and literally ONLY that narrow segment of the gay community were in Rehoboth. Rehoboth still retains is queer friendly reputation, not sure if its well deserved or a hangover from years prior but I will say it does seem more welcoming of lesbians and younger queer people, who tend not to segregate by color the way that the Rehoboth dudes did in the ealrly 00s and before.

I noticed a week ago when I was in OC that there are tons of cars on the road from NY, Nj and PA. You typically never see cars from these states in OC Md. I suspect Rehoboth is getting in influx of folks from NY, NJ and PA too.

I worked in the Rehoboth and OC area in the late 1970's and thru the 1980's.

At that time Rehoboth was gay couples and old school, old name families from Wilmington and Philadelphia who had had the family beach houses going back to the 1920's. Both Rehoboth and OC were surrounded by farms. Peaches were
grown right out of Rehoboth and also corn. In the 1970's a number of mobile home parks were developed in the Millville
Long Neck Millsboro and Dagsoboro areas. If a tract of farm land went to auction local lawyers bought up the land and put in mobile home parks that house thousands of residents.

Selbyville and Georgetown both have large chicken processing factories. In the 1970's the production lines
were mostly staffed by white middle aged ladies.

Now white and black people don't want to work in the chicken factories so the chicken companies recruit Haitians and Hispanic workers from South Florida to move to Delaware.

A huge amount of land in the area 40 miles to the coast and in between has been developed and is marketed to retires. Delaware has low property taxes although that will most likely be changing.

Other than the poultry industry and some retail there is not much in the way of year round jobs in Sussex County. Residents drive a long way typically for work.

I think the huge development over the decades starting with the trailer parks in the 70's and the housing developments that displaced what was farmland has changed the density of Rehoboth from what it used to be:
upper crust residents from the Mainline and the well to do from Wilmington and gay partners from the DC area.

OP, take a visit to PC Beach in Florida. (Panama City Beach). I'm a size 16 and I felt postively svelte on Panama City Beach. I think most of the women
on the beach were over 250 pounds.

I think all the build out in surrounding towns, Millville, etc has caused a lot more crowding. Staying in Rehoboth or Bethany now is too expensive for what it is.
