This thread is 8 years old and OP posted on p 1 that they were apparently maggots after all.

Definitely sounds like maggots! They don't always appear near a food source, and they can travel pretty far. I once had a bunch crawl all the way across my kitchen from where they hatched: a pack of (clean! dry!) toilet paper that was sitting on the floor.

Kill as many of them as you can and expect to have a fly plague this week anyway.

I am not sure why this old post got dusted off - but pretty sure the original poster was talking about weevils.

This is one of the reasons we don't have a pet. How do you know what comes inside with them?

Those definitely sound like varied carpet beetles.

If you have a pet like a cat or dog and their dander gets caught in the carpet, chances are you have carpet beetles.

If you don't vacuum regularly you'll be infested with them (and you dont need to have carpet to have an infestation of varied carpet beetles)
