Oh I think it means something. It says something about the quality of the applicant pool, the academic self selection that its applicants go through. And not to turn this into a UVA vs. W&M thread, but UVA's yield is also in the thirties -- 38% in 2016-2017. Part of the explanation for the low yield for both schools, and this is relevant to the thread, is the very high costs for OOS students. Are both still Public Ivy's in the sense originally meant --ie offering a superior education at an exceptional price? I would suggest only for Virginia residents. Whether that's worth it or not for OOS parents will depend on circumstances. If I were a NY resident and my kid was accepted to Binghampton and also to UVA or W&M, I'd be very tempted to send them south and even incur some financial pain to do so. Not trying to bust on Binghampton, but it's just not in the same ballpark.

If you are in MD and don't get into UMD then you have to go OOS somewhere. JMU OOS is $38,508, UMD in-stste is $26,754. Not terrible compared to other OOS publics, like Delaware at $45,482.

True way back when but not so much any more. $10K wasn't enough to make the argument for us, sorry. Would still have cost us $50K even WITH TAG next year...

I couldn’t, but most DC residents can. Up to $10K per year, you have to apply annually, and Congress is always threatening to get rid of it. That said, it isn’t limited to VA schools — applies to any other public with OOS tuition higher than in state. Many options in that category I’d choose over the VA schools being asked about.

It really depends on the quality of your kid's record, and how much money you have.

JMU has a great reputation. Kids like it, and they get good jobs when they graduate. Certainly not a school for the elite, but a good solid option.
