Oh, really? Let’s see...$2000 PER WEEK, just in tips, as OP said - so that’s $333 in tips per day for a 6-day work week, which is a $16 tip for each customer at 20 customers a day. What luck that this guy works at a place where he gets $16 in tips from every customer, every day! I should become a nail technician.

I'm fine with people reporting whatever they consider to be potential fraud of our shared government.

I also think that everyone should be well aware that the most recent USDA report reconfirms that SNAP fraud (which does get researched and studied) remains at overall about 1 penny out of every 1 dollar.

So, just to be clear -- report fraud if you suspect it, AND remain aware that for every case of fraud, that balances against hundreds people who are struggling and using the system without fraud of any kind.

Op here. This is so bizarre that she would be lying about cheating welfare. She gave me lots of details about how she cheated so I think she's really committing fraud. I don't feel comfortable working with her anymore and I am not sure how to go about telling church. My daughter is in the same classroom so I think it may be tricky changing to another room.


You didn't answer the question so I will elaborate. I used to work in an impoverished school (AmeriCorps). One of my colleagues would make comments like you describe here. I also thought she was cheating the system, until she asked me to drive her past the place she was "staying." It was a literal trailer park. Everything she ever owned came from Wal-Mart. She was making less than $10k/year. Maybe she was lying on the forms, maybe she wasn't, but if she was, she didn't need to be.

Research your state's food stamp (SNAP) policies for details.

It's more likely that you, op, are correct: if he's the father of the kids, he probably needs to be included, if he lives with them.

If you want to report them, fine. But for your own sake, just remember that for all you know, she's receiving all benefits legally, but lying about her boyfriend's income.

The USDA defines a family for eligibility purposes as any group, related or otherwise, who lives together and purchases and prepares meals together. Take that for what you will. Medicaid applies similar criteria. So, OP, if you are aware that she is lying about her household make up, you may have evidence of a program violation.

I personally think that OP is here to stir up trouble as evidenced by her frequent, incredulous responses to posters questioning her desire to report. I work with a population that relies on food stamps and Medicaid while working crappy, minimum wage jobs. They are doing their best to get by and are honest people.


I just noticed today these huge advertisements on the side of metro buses urging people to report SNAP fraud so I don’t think it’s the OP stiring up trouble. Sounds like enough of an issue that the want people to actively report.

Not PP, but another PP who has found this story extremely fishy. Regardless of whether she is telling the truth about fraud or not, I think it’s not unreasonable to mention to your pastor or whoever that you are uncomfortable working with someone who brags about fraud. She may be lying, but the bragging about lying really has no place in a church nursery, you know?
