What? Saying you are not qualified to teach is not the same as saying the public school system taught you squat. My neighbor is very smart and well educated. She's a good attorney. But when I needed a root canal I didn't call her. Saying you are not qualified to do a certain job doesn't mean you are stupid or public school failed you. It means you are not qualified for every job.

Your logic is deeply flawed.

I have to agree. I am sure there are some families who homeschool and do it really well but the lack of regulations should concern us all. Look at those poor kids who parents abused them and kept them locked up for years in CA and in part no one knew because the kids weren't going to school. No, I'm not implying all homeschoolers abuse their kids, of course not, but I am calling for more regulations, standards, and check ins. Anyone who tells me there are enough standards please explain that horrific situation and how those kids fell through the cracks.

I have a relative who homeschooled her boys in a very rural area of VA. She does not have a college degree and has no business homeschooling them at least past a certain point. The plan was for them to join the military and then eventually college. Well they are both done with high school, no signs of joining the military or college, they just live at home and don't seem to have a plan. She did have them involved in club sports, scouts, etc. to meet other kids. They are polite, sweet boys. But they need some independence and I'm not sure why she didn't let them go to high school. It seems her hang ups are precluding them from ever having a good education and for having the confidence to get jobs and a life of their own.

Parents are the primary educators of their children.

OP here. One of the mothers I attend church with and she brags about creatively gaming the Welfare system. She's 22 with 3 children and has not attended college. I volunteer in the nursery with her and the entire time she "plays" on her phone. She's a paid employee. The other mother has 5 children and her grammar is truly awful. Most of her teeth are missing. She says things like, "Turn them lights own or I ain’t never seed this before or Zat yo’ car?"

Why does it matter? Basic elementary concepts are NOT difficult to teach a child.

Now, high school you have a point but I know very few high school homeschool families where the kids are only taught by the parent. Usually people do a homeschool co-op, kids take classes at the local CC, online schooling..

As a homeschooler, I'm going to have to go ahead and agree here. If you can read, you can teach elementary math. I find it disconcerting to think that there are people who believe that teaching first through fifth grade math is too hard for the average teacher. Do you really think that the average person, college-educated or not, is so woefully unprepared that they don't understand how multiplication works? That doesn't speak too highly of that public school system you all seem to think is so preferable to homeschooling.

How about a worse subset of homeschoolers: UNSCHOOLING.

Basically, the mom does nothing. She doesn't have to plan anything structured. She can also feel sanctimonious that her way is better because her kids are learning SO MUCH more than all the kids at school.

Is it a wonder that mostly idiots are doing this? It's child abuse and should be illegal.
