I think McConnell will win this round, and the 8th will perhaps bring some lame attempt at a bill, but only if some juicy gobbets are attached to it, other than the wall: entitlement reform, more health care garbage, or a repeal of Roe v. Wade.

That would put the Dems in a very nasty place. They would have to give some tidbits that Ryan will go for, otherwise he will just refuse to bring it to the floor, despite whatever promises have been made to the contrary.

McConnell said from the Senate floor Sunday night that "should these issues not be resolved by the time the funding bill before us expires on February 8, 2018, assuming that the government remains open, it would be my intention to proceed to legislation that would address (the expiring Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program), border security, and related issues."

Look, McConnell continued his statement about taking up DACA and border security after the 8th with the other things listed above. I suggest you listen to the whole statement, not just a sound bite. This process will be an open invitation to lots of other ‘deals’.

I take it to mean he’ll allow bills on those things on the floor - he’s lately just been saying no to bills/discussions of certain issues. Now couldn’t it happen that they again ignore all this stuff until Feb 7, govt is still open so he must allow bills so he does, in the 11th he there is so much disagreement that ppl start attaching these things to the budget vote to get them thru and we shutdown again?

Senate votes first which takes hours with speeches etc. best case - they finish by 2-3 pm, it goes to the house - which tends to vote faster. They’re done by 4-ish pm and then it goes to the prez. So first day of govt being open fully would be Tuesday if it goes according to plan.

Don’t usually follow congress/senate this closely but isn’t there going to be a written bill they vote on which will have a clause saying “we vote on DACA on x date”? If yes, isn’t it harder to turn on that later? My understanding on healthcare (rudimentary as it was) was that it was more of a back room verbal promise that you can later back out/ignore more easily. Isn’t a written bill “enforceable” in any way?
