If DD had great stats then we would be looking at great schools. Unfortunately, she does not have that luxury. News flash, not everyone does.

It is ranked (USNWR #42) ahead of other good state schools including Wisconsin (46), Penn State (52), Ohio State (54), Georgia (54), Texas (56), UMD (61).

I am the author of the post about my DD regretting not applying to schools that DCUM frowns upon. There ARE no bad colleges - there are only students who don't get enough out of the college they attend.

I went there. ‘87 grad. Grew up in Gville. Came up to DC for law school. OOS requirements are tougher. My DD (junior in HS is considering UF) along with VATech, UVA, WM.

The last sentence sums up the DCUM attitude in a nutshell. It's tough to admit that the state school kids, who attend a decent flagship school, are nearly as well off as the kids of parents who spend five figures for private schooling, followed by six figures to pay for junior to got to Georgetown and then grad school. People want to feel that all that money spent was worthwhile. And getting through a big state school takes some self-initiative.

Most of the big "football schools" are more selective than people realize. They are usually good deals, especially in-state. And most people who get into their flagship schools tend to qualify for various merit scholarships, bringing the cost down even more. Quite a few students are attending good state schools basically for free. I am in a constant state of amazement by how much money upper-middle class people in the Northeast think they have to spend on education.

OP, while UF might not be as susceptible as some privates, IF your DD shows improvement it can matter a lot.

As a junior, if she can improve from her 9th and 10th GPA this semester and get close to a 4.0 in the spring and credit her interest in UF for her turn around, it will matter.

They seem to be a coalition app school so there is definitely a way to include this idea, I don't know if UF admissions will read it but at least it is a direction to start in.

Have her get her grades up NOW.
