Neither is a Big 10 school. Duke is ACC; Cornell is Ivy. But if your kid is not into frats or college basketball, Cornell is a better pick, especially for engineering.
I would seriously consider winter tolerance.

Are people actually concerned about crime or is that just code for black people living nearby? I went to Duke and honestly know one person who was the victim of a crime not perpetrated by another student, and it was getting randomly punched in the face. I can’t even recall a car break-in. And that was before downtown Durham transformed.

We have a mix of Ivy, Duke, Stanford, MIT, and then your STEM majors from state schools. I'm glad your circles are so non-mediocre, but unfortunately I think you're living in an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel if that's how you think the world still works.

But Penn started out like HYP, and in a major city to boot. And, over time, both the city and the university failed to keep up, and everyone knows it.
Plenty of students turn down Penn for Duke, or apply to Duke but not Penn. And the Duke students are, by far, a happier bunch. But Penn students will never be happy because the vast majority really wanted HYP (or S), and they know that their disappointment is transparent to the world. Nothing will ever make their hurt go away. Not having Wharton on campus for the grinds, or having Duke, Northwestern, or Chicago to look down on. They still went to Penn.
Lol how can we even take you seriously if you dont even know the basics about the ivies?

Cornell is very greek as well.
Duke is not in the Big 10.

I have family at both. Did he apply to Pratt or Trinity? For engineering, Cornell is generally better with the exception of biomedical. If we are talking arts and sciences, it's a wash for undergrad STEM. While Duke is in the ACC, plenty of reasons to go there besides basketball. Weather might be a consideration.
