No Bethesda/Potomac subsidized massive county with 200+ schools, 100s of new esol resources, $ millions of free lunches and supply giveaways, can do anything to stop the downward spiral. Just attracts more if the same and accelerates the curriculum and student body demise.

And ppl ask why privates have <10% acceptance rates and the ability increase tuition 5-8% per year. Ever notice almost a third of Bethesda and Potomac goes private nowadays??!??

We certainly would have stayed in DC and not bothered w this nonsense. mCPs definition of a “great school” (ie good scores on proficiency tests) is laughable.

FARMS funding comes from the federal government, as does much of the ESOL funding. But why let facts get in the way of a good narrative about how white folks are oppressed.

Please. MCPS has one budget. Money is limited. Our school had to set aside more money to cover increased hours for an eSOL teacher. That has led to cuts in other places and we are short one para.

No idea who pays for the FARMS meals but the ESOL Teachers absolutely take away resources from non-ESOL positions.

This BS again? Don't worry...ESOL allocations are getting slashed significantly and MCPS' master plan is to build capacity in classroom teachers so they can play the dual role of classroom teacher AND ESOL teacher. I'll bet you'll be back to complain when that happens since the classroom teachers will be even more overloaded than they currently are.

Anonymous wrote:You don’t need to pay tuition. MCPS does not require proof of anything - they are not allowed to because we have a large population of kids who may lack appropriate documentation.

You can use a friend’s address who lives in bounds. Much cheaper than trying to figure out a way to pay tuition! Or just offer to pay someone to use their address.

We have quite a few kids at our ES and MS who do not live in boundary. They use family members’ or friends’ addresses.

Also, once you get into a MS, you can automatically go to the HS that MS feed into.

MoCo isn’t a sanctuary city because federal tax dollars fund it, it is moco taxes and policies.

Maddening. When did we vote for this? How did we miss the discussion about this county wide goal of packing as many immigrants as possible into our schools and having homeowners pay for it?

The growth of FARM students in are not the product of MC. If one lookes at data carefully, the FARM rate growth is correlate to ESOL growth. Many of the new poverty is the new residents! I dont know if MC is a Sanctuary City or not. Al most two third of violent crimes are committed by people who are not born here

Actually the parents there are supportive of teachers.

Many W school families get tutors and actively seek to support their children at home. I would rather deal with the over wealthy and semi-drug culture than deal with guns being on campus (as Wilson has dealt with over the past year).

W schools also have a history of continuity versus DCPS with their administration and its faculty. Continuity is important when dealing with education, it means that admin and teachers aren't building a plane while flying it mid-air.

You're making some big assumptions there. My only experience is with Pyle, but that school has massive staff turnover. As parents, many of us have been trying to figure it out.

Teachers leave Pyle because of the parents. Several friends and coworkers have stated that.

There are families that do this. Less expensive than paying tuition probabaly?

For FY 2016 (two years ago), MCPS non-resident tuition for secondary school was $14,299. Are there many market-rate one-bedroom apartments available in Bethesda or Potomac for less than $1,192 per month?

Lots of people are willing to rent out a room or rent out a bedroom in their condo/townhouse. For $600/month it is a fantastic deal! Cheaper than private school.

OP's husband inherited a house mortgage free in the Wilson area in NWDC. She could rent it for 3-6K a month depending on its characteristics, and easily find a 2-3 BR apartment for less in a W area.

Please tell where these easily found 2-3 bedroom apts are.

Not true. We both teach for MCPS. To register my child, MCPS required proof of address including utility bills. When we moved from one address to another less than a half mile away, MCPS required we submit new proofs of address. Oddly, we simply filled out a form from the internet to change our address as MCPS employees.

What's wrong with Wilson? Go park by the Tenelytown Metro when school lets out. That will answer your question.

Apply to private schools and ask for scholarships. You are fortunate. Don’t do something you’ll regret.

My neighbor rents out tiny rooms in her house and she charges $1300/month and this is the WJ cluster. I seriously doubt she'd rent to a high schooler either - who would want to be mommy to another kid that they don't even know?

Umm, the kid doesn’t actually live there! They just use that address and keep their current home. Pay the rent and use the address to fulfill MCPS residency requirements. I’m mom practice.

Well, sign me up then - where's my high school kid??
Only, the homeowner has to write this all up on their taxes as income and possibly deduct capital expenses against the room charge which seems like a huge hassle that has consequences when you sell your home. So, most likely it's not worth it.

So funny. You must be American, or you are just incredibly naive.

The people who do this are NOT claiming this on their taxes as income. Do you think that someone who does this is actually going to claim it? This is all cash. Money transferred amongst ‘family’. You have no clue how things work in immigrant families.
