Op, I am with you. Too young for this type of experimentation. It seems as though a lot of frustrated women who didn't experiment in their lives and now regret it, are guiding this thought process. And my daughter's BFF cornered her during a sleepover and said "let's give it a try, I really like you." My daughter is no longer friends with this girl, my daughter's choice. It is not normal for a lot of girls, but they are certainly being pressured into it by other girls. I wonder, is this considered sexual harassment? My daughter's friend also came out as Pan sexual in 8th grade. Who cares? Live and let live? Teens are just trying to figure out who they are and sort out identity issues. Not everything can be tied in a neat bow.

LOL, my friends middle schooler came out as pansexual. Whatever in the hell that is.

It is so sad to read this bigot adult judge an innocent child who has no idea someone is even posting about her. I am sure this poster comes across as this pleasant "I love everyone and God" human in person. But whoa, here and behind closed doors? Brutal.

What is really sad is that there adults, presumably, who are willing to enable vulnerable kids to get mixed up in this nonsense that could truly harm them emotionally and psychologically, for quite some time.

I'm a PP who came out as bi at thirteen. It wasn't trendy, or cool, and in fact it was pretty difficult for me to come to terms with. I thought I "should" be straight or a lesbian too. But my bisexuality has held and, despite the change in landscape (I'm in my early thirties), bisexuality is a valid sexual orientation - and yes, it's possible to know at twelve!

1. sex and gender are synonyms
2. there are only two sexes/genders

Exactly. I do believe that sex (male or female) and gender (male or female) are the same thing. And I believe in only male or female or a combination of the two. I don't believe there in a third gender/sex. I understand that kids want to make up a new term... but I admit that it does make me roll my eyes.

Comments like this are why it took me until I was 22 to come out. I was constantly worried that I only found girls attractive because 'it's a fad' or 'for attention'---and I graduated HS in '06.

Several of my lesbian friends came out as bi first, all while knowing they were not attracted to boys/men. They say it was easier to test the waters that way...to see how much acceptance they get. If they faced rejection, especially with family members, they could always save face, "choose a man" after all. If they're bi they haven't made a concrete official declaration that they're only attracted to women.

It's a lot of mental gymnastics, but these are young teens and it's not black and white. And it isn't set in stone. They're figuring things out.

It's possible that this particular 12-year-old is wrong. A lot of girls have same-sex crushes at this age, and aren't actually lesbian or bi. But it's equally possible that she already recognizes that she is attracted to both men and women, just as it's possible for a 12-year-old to realize that she is only attracted to men or only attracted to women.

If you think that it's possible for a 12-year-old girl to know that she is attracted to members of the opposite sex, then it's possible for her to know that she's attracted to both members of the opposite sex and her own sex. I suppose you can believe that girls that age can't possibly know that they are straight, but most people don't think that. Kids that age have crushes and are attracted to others.
