All religious holidays should all be eliminated from the school calendar. People can practice their superstitious mumbo-jumbo on their own time.

What do the Jewish teachers do then? The Jewish population has sharply decreased in MC since the 80's, especially Orthodox. I can't imagine more than 3-5% of the teachers are Jewish. Show us numbers MCPS. Back up your reasons.

This is based on nothing but your own prejudiced speculation.

+1000
I have many Jewish friends who teach in MCPS. You think you can tell someone's religion from their last name? Ridiculous.

That is the fault of the county for lack of hiring.

Blaming "the county" is just ridiculous. MCPS can't force people to become subs. Many sub jobs go unfolded now, not because the county has failed to hire people, but because too few people apply to become subs. The same is true of bus drivers.

The problem they are no longer allowed to ask what people's religion is..the last data is from the 70s. I agree things have changed! I guess the only way to know is to try it for a year. If they are short on subs..admin will have to cover some classes and maybe some will double up. Then we will know.

This thread has devolved into a Jew-hater fest. It's like the Klan in here, talking about Jewish teachers and how people don't see any. Maybe they aren't wearing their yellow stars this month???? Shame on you.

I would ideally prefer the year-round model. I know that's not popular bc all the rich MoCo family shave vacations to take. Us middle-class people have to stitch together camps and sitters and TV.

It has to do with the economy you nitwit. The fact that you think it has to do with rich people taking another vacation is ridiculous and embarrassing.

Yes, and specifically what about the economy? The benefits to Maryland's tourism industry from people in Maryland taking vacations.

PP, you are pretty clueless to how the state's economy works.

My kids have had some very scary subs over the years. Pretty sure it's not easy to just hire more subs or they wouldn't be hiring who they are currently hiring.

We've been in MCPS for 9 years (two kids). My kids have personally had 6 teachers who I was aware were Jewish. There were also others in their schools who were also Jewish. And there may have been some who are Jewish that I didn't know.

It's a sub issue, genius.

This area has a high concentration of Jewish people, and many are teachers. Once you cut a Jewish holiday, the number of subs available - b/c they're already scarce - aren't enough to cover.

Jewish people teach, too, you know . . .

I have never met a Jewish teacher.

That's ridiculous. You probably just don't know that your kids have Jewish teachers. My kids have had many. You probably have stereotypes about what a jewish teacher would look like or act like.

DP
I'm Jewish and over the past 6 years (and many teachers in MCPS) only one of them has been Jewish.
