I think they are just insecure at heart. This is why they need to be judgmental, put on 'airs', act better than then next person. Their heritage and legacy is based on colonialism. Robbing, enslaving and stealing from other countries. Not much substance there.
British banter is the best. The Brits know how to incorporate humour into any political discussion.

In typical Brit fashion, they simply changed the terminology to suit their needs.
Slaves were no longer called slaves. They were now "indentured servants" or "colonial subjects" or delegated to the lowest class without mobility thus without actual freedoms.

Doesn't mean there were no slaves in Britain during that time. There were slaves serving as cooks, maids, etc in cities such as Bristol and Liverpool.

Um, you know the Brits compensated the slave owners for losing their slaves to abolition, right? Those slave owners reinvested their money in other colonial development schemes, which made them richer.
And, yah, there were slaves in Britain pre anti slavery.
The US had its own form of colonialism and empire building as well.
