No, she wasn't on Britney's level. Few have been. Maybe the eight year olds at Britney concerts didn't care for her, but she was definitely big among teens too (I was a young teen then and hung out on a lot of teen-focused message boards).

Jessica Simpson came nowhere close to Britney. The reality show got her more notice than her career. I agree w the PP that Christina was the distant second to Britney. As far as I can remember right now, all or most of the rest of her contemporaries were one-hit types. Their songs had more impact than they did.

I'm Britney's age and disagree with the comment on Jennifer Lopez, she was not seen as old (then). The young crowd was very into JLo. She had music, movies, glitz, glamour. Also who do you think was wearing her perfume and clothing line? Certainly not 30 year olds. And don't forget J Lo's love life - Kim Kardashian had nothing on this woman.

She wasn't in the same category. These were all young pop stars. Jennifer Lopez at that time was more urban R&B. She was considered hot because of her hurt, nobody actually held her to Britney's level nor was she even close to the level of exposure Brit was. Britney had Pepsi commercials, Super Bowl halftime shows, massive world tours and her music video releases were events (probably the last of the days when this was true).
