+1. I've never understood the obsession here.

+1 on the Whole Foods frosting. Way too expensive for frosting that tastes like Crisco.

No, I obviously didn't notice. Oops!

AdequateParent wrote:Wow, didn't know I had bad taste-- I like HT. I come from a long line of pretty good bakers and think that Harris Teeter makes a very good cake for the $$. Their chocolate cake is very moist, unlike Giant. Only point deduction I would give is for the frosting, which is sugar and not real buttercream, which is what I prefer. But all three are just sugar frosting, which the kids love anyway.

We've done giant and Safeway and I'd put HT out front by a fair margin.

I ordered a cake from HT last year and specifically asked for the buttercream frosting. Everyone loved the cake. I did not manage to get a piece myself, so I don't know if it was really buttercream or not. Do you think they lied and it wasn't really buttercream. The year before that I got a buttercream cake at Wegman's, which was also good but too far a trip so we did HT. Not sure what we will do this year. Maybe Costco if we have more than 30 people.

You two new PP's realize that the OP asked for this information just over 4 years ago, right? And that before you, this thread was last commented on over a year and a half ago. I think OP either found a cake for her party or doesn't care anymore.

I think that they are all good. I'd give Giant a distant third though.
Safeway has the best carrot cake I've ever had.
Harris Teeter had the best coconut cake.

I think that the Harris Teeter coconut cake is the best. If you love coconut you will love their cakes. Their cake tastes better than Safeway and Giant.

Ditto.

Which frosting is better from Harris Teeter, the whipped satin or the buttercream?

Wegmans cakes are outstanding. Great selection of cakes, fillings and frostings, and reasonably priced too.

We have gotten safeway cakes for my daughter's last two birthdays and cupcakes for a number of occasions. People always remark that the cake and the frosting both taste really good. This year we went the sheet-cake-with-design route; last year we went with cupcakes. I will continue buying cakes from them.

I can bake a cake from scratch, and did for my daughter's first bday, but i'm time-constrained and I can't frost properly either.

Baking the cake is no problem and my frosting is delicious--but I can't frost worth crap. Even just a basic frost job sucks. I really want to make a special cake (bus or something) and I can get the shapes down but not the frosting.

Costco and Safeway are great.

Giant is so-so.

Harris Teeter and Whole Foods are inedible.

While we're on the subject, what happened to moms baking cakes for parties?

Is it a D.C. thing? I've never even considered buying a cake. I've always made them from scratch. And I'm not bragging. It's pretty easy to make a cake.

We've made cupcakes for both my son's birthdays so far.

Post back when you have three kids, including an elementary aged one with sports etc., and an infant who refuses to sleep. I am a kick ass baker but it is not worth the effort right now. My boss proposed to me several times before kids when I brought in pies and cakes to share with the office.

Safeway and Giant are comparable.. I bought a wegman's one thinking it would be steps above but it was not (in fact worse).. Costco sheet cakes are all lard and disgusting.. I haven't tried it yet but whole market uses butter (I talked to the baking manager) so there's hope there.. i did not find whole foods to be anything out of this world. If you're near amphora (though pricier) is really good.. had parents say this for dd's 4th bday party..
