I agree. I think there should be some science taught there though. Why aren't they at these buildings? Is there not enough room?

The Virginia law is up to 22, not 23.

I'm now going to insist on sitting in for a few minutes in EVERY SINGLE CLASS my child has in middle and high school. If principals balk, I will file a FOIA request to find out just who is sitting in class with my child and their ages.

If this info isn't provided, I will escalate from there.

All parents should do this and policies will change quickly.

I have elem age kids, and at this point, there is still a class roster.... but not at the MS or HS level.

without papers how do we know how old these adults really are? I guess they could say any age.

I commented on another thread but it's relevant here- I am a sixth grade teacher and once had a class with students aged 10,11,12,13 AND 14. It was a disaster for so many reasons.

This was also an ELL class made of new arrivals, primarily from DR but also Puerto Rico and some Central America . Most years that was a great class but the age mix that year didn't work and the older student was involved with gangs and a terrible influence all around. School couldn't do anything (it said) and said he had to stay there because he had failed the year before. This is NYC. I am at a new school now.

Do parents in general have ANY idea that their children are in classes with adults? This is absolutely astonishing to me and I've been deeply involved in our schools via the PTA, School Board races etc... for nearly two decades. I'm shocked. Truly. I thought these "adult children" went to an alternative school. My gosh, I'm going to recommend EVERY new home buyer study a school's ESOL percentage before purchasing a home - OR plan to go to private school.

I am completely blown away right now. This is all news to me. I do not want my 14 year old DD socializing with 21 year old men outside of school (at the mall, etc) but here they are sitting next to them in class all day. WTH?

To the suggestion that FCPS parents should be outraged that their teen could be in class with 20+ year old students: other than relying on the teen to relay this (and plenty of teens can't judge age correctly), how is a parent to know who is in the class with their teen?

Its the law of the land in FCPS. I teach Biology in FCPS and ESOL students take booty their junior year when they are at level 3. Most of my classes are team taught which means half the students are general Ed and the rest ESOL. Biology is generally a freshman class. EVERY team taught class I have has 1-2 20-21 year olds and several 19 year olds. Lots of times sitting next to 14 year old girls. 95% of them are great hard working kids but some of them whistle and holler at young girls and one of the 20 year olds was dating a 15 year old for a bit. Some are definitely gang members, they wear Chicago bulls and Marylyn Monroe gear all the time and ALWAYS want bathroom breaks. Nothing I can do about but try my best. Shitty system that allows grown men to pick up young teenagers.

The Supreme Court ruling needs to be overruled. Seriously, again, no other country does this.
You are 16, you've never, or barely been in school in your own country all your life, then you are encouraged to go to trade school or work.
If you are motivated you can go to school in the evening.
