I think the schools that closed had little choice since they had over 300 staff members call out. So there would not be enough subs and it becomes a safety issue with not enogih adults to teach/supervise.

I think if you are lucky enough to have leave and be able to take it then you can use it how you want. And if your choice is to take March 8th off, great. I'm from Europe and we celebrate March 8 and give flowers and cards to women in our lives (moms, sisters, partners etc). I'm choosing to go to work and save my vacation days. My husband is deployed so I will be doing all childcare after work. My nanny is choosing not to take off (she could if she wanted to use a paid day). So it a business as usual in my world but I certainly support people and businesses that choose to voice their protest in this way. I personally don't think it accomplishes as much as say donating money to women candidates and others who support living wage, fair paternal leave policies.

You think it is ridiculous that women can use earned leave. You think that women should be told what day they are allowed to use their earned leave?
Many (most?) workers are told when they can or cannot use their earned leave? I have to ask for approval and it can be denied if other people have already requested that time off and we won't be able to maintain minimum essential coverage. My husband is further restricted by only being allowed to take off time when Congress is out of session.
