There are a lot of Duke grads in this area. I know several and while they are reasonably smart, they are not particularly impressive. They still seem obsessed with Duke though and talk about it constantly while most people (over forty) have moved on from their college years.
This is common for students who attended expensive schools. The students have spent (or their parents have) a lot of money on the school and the school tells them over and over again how special they are to attend the school. You eventually start believing it and you think the school is amazing and so worth it. I remember my private elementary school doing this. I was maybe 6 and they would tell us how special we were to attend and how fortunate our parents spent the money and valued education. It's a form of brainwashing.

This.
This...is something people only say on the internet. Never heard anyone in real life have the balls to say something so short-sighted and stupid.
I went to Duke. I advised my oldest child to go to William and Mary instead (yes, she got into both). So you'd be wrong.

Domestic students at Duke not only turned down their in-state flagship, they turned down generous (if not full) scholarships from the in-state to attend Duke. The connections, competitiveness, resources, beauty, faculty are unmatched.
+1 My Duke resume opened so many doors for me that I'm not sure would have been available if I'd gone to a state school, no matter how highly ranked it was. It is just not the same.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:There is very little daylight between Duke and UVA, other than the price tags. Different families will have different opinions on whether the difference in price tag is a lot or a little. So there's no right answer to this question.
But again, the difference between the schools is the price tag. No appreciable difference in the educational experience.
Total garbage. The quality of students at Duke exceeds those at UVA. The overwhelming majority of UVA students would be rejected from Duke. When it comes to education, the quality of the students around you matters. On that, Duke wins out hands down.
Uh, okay.![]()
