To clear some things up: (1) I have a toddler in DOL currently and have spoken with staff about what happened (2) There were multiple teachers in the room (I've never seen a room without at least two teachers in it), (3) the heimlech and cpr were applied by staff, without success, (4) paramedics arrived, and were still unable to revive the child, (5) the grandmother, not the parents, has been giving interviews to everyone, and she is obviously grieving, but knows nothing about what actually happened, (6) the mother is devastated and hasn't said a word to the media yet, (7) the staff is devastated. I'm very happy with DOL, and we are all sad. For the people who made baseless accusations against the daycare, FOAD!
Nothing mentioned was disgusting or judgemental. Everyone said how shocked and sad they were.
x 2. You're a bit defensive PP

Anonymous wrote:To the poster who was shocked that there were only 2 teachers for 13 kids.... This is totally within DC child care center ratio, which is 1 to 10 for 2.5-3 year olds and 1 to 8 for 2-2.5 year olds.

Had a 2 year old gag choke on a diced peach today because she's a shoveler and doesn't like to chew her food. Not much I can do about it except stay on top of her and never let her eat out of my direct line of sight. But I know that isn't a guarantee she won't choke. Nothing is guaranteed except that accidents happen. I'm so sorry for the family's loss and that the little guy doesn't get to live his life.
You are absolutely right. I've been thinking about this, too. I have let my 3yo snack in the car, and I have let her snack alone while I quickly ran upstairs to change a diaper, etc. This is a good reminder to slow down, stay safe, and focus only on eating and drinking when we are eating and drinking. It is a tragedy, and just absolutely horrible. I am so sorry for the family, the daycare staff, the families at the daycare...but I will honor the life of this little one by renewing my commitment to care and safety.
