The nanny makes probably $20/hr. And she clearly thought she was helping if she bothered to do it. It's a lesson you can either absorb as a parent and define clear instructions for any and or pass on a hard luck experience for your kid. I'd personally give the kid another set. I get what people say about the free building and reassembling but for kids who also love sets - building it like a model can be a lot of the fun.

Take it out of the nanny's paycheck she'll be careful next time

Why did the nanny feel she had to clean up an8-year-old's toys in the first place? By that age, cleaning up her own things should have long ago become her own responsibility, nanny or no nanny.

You could sit with the kid and as they request a certain kind of block from the instructions, it's your job (or the nanny's?) to find it - or something similar.

Definitely have the nanny fix the problem she created by finding the pieces using the directions. Yup it sucks but she is the one who dumped them in.

PP here who said we didn't have luck reconstructing -- it's certainly worth a try to see if you can find the pieces & reassemble first! We did get portions of it rebuilt & tried to sub in some things - but some of the finer details and things that delighted my DD were pretty hard and not 'replacable' with other regular or semi regular lego pieces
