Most of my friends drive either Toyota Sienna or the Honda version. I don't think the Honda version has AWD - a huge drawback for me, but we are also buying another minivan, because they really are useful, and we are far beyond what other people think of us. Are you and your wife very young, OP (in this way of thinking)?
Of those friends, many (perhaps most or all, come to think of it), also own luxury SUVs. Guess which car gets driven the most? Yup, The minivan. It is more practical. These were people who swore they would "never" get a minivan. LOL.

OP - I would not get her the actual car and present it with her. It's a very romantic thought and all, but truthfully she should be able to choose something like that, not to mention the money you will lose if you need to return it or sell it yourself. You're better off having her do the picking.
So...what is even a better idea is to tell her one of her gifts is a lunch date and then a trip to buy a new coat (or something other than a car...). Go to lunch and enjoy yourself and then drive to the dealership rather than the mall. She will be surprised and happy. She will be able to test drive the cars and choose one. You may need to visit a few dealerships so pick the location wisely so you're not driving all over the place.
I would be thrilled if my husband did something like that for me. It's very sweet of you!

No mom wants a Mercedes sedan. GLE and GLS are both great for kids. If you are going to have another kid, and will keep the car for5 years or so,I'd get something with a third row. MDX or Pilot.
I'm a mom and I love my Mercedes sedan. But I hate SUVs and minivans, so would never choose to buy/drive one.

Seriously, never buy a Ford. Walk into any smaller mechanic shop and ask them what they think of Ford.

We have a good fiend who owns a huge Ford dealership out-of-state. He convinced me to come in and test drive the ugliest SUV/SUV Crossover on the planet. It looks like a damn hearse. I drove it over the weekend and fell in love! Seriously considering buying the monstrosity. I have another friend who is an exec with Ford. I called him and he said it is by far his favorite Ford product. But they are ugly so they aren't selling. Meet the Flex!

A lot of parents like the CRV. The new for 2017 looks really nice and won't break the bank. And if you go on line to Hyannis Honda or one other up north you can get a Honda bumper to bumper warranty for like $1500 for 8 years, 120k
Miles. Normally a warranty isn't worth it. But these two dealers sell them for pennies and its Honda factory warranty.
And being higher in a SUV with awd is really nice

Plenty of woman love their minivans! Lot's of mom's on here are very self conscious of what other people my think of them based on the cars they drive... hence all of the anti-minivan rhetoric. The DCUM hive mind makes it look like all woman hate being seen in a minivan though. It's just the types that tend to frequent this board.
