That is far more for you than the teacher. Tacky.
Incredibly tacky!
I think it is lovely.
I agree, I don't find it tacky at all.
If teachers do, maybe they can send out a press release via the school with their accepted gifts.

I'm not sure tacky is the right word. Maybe presumptuous? I do not think it's okay to donate money in someone else's name unless you know for certain it's a cause that person would support.
Tacky is the parent giving teachers envelopes of cash.
That is your view. Some teachers on this thread said cash gifts are ok. Also, you do not seem to be very culturally aware. In some cultures giving money is acceptable.

Gift cards to Target (always useful)
Starbucks cards
Gift certificate to Thriftbooks.com which is a site I LOVE because it has tons of cheap books including lots of older ones that are out of print. I did this in preschool for teachers to buy books for their class or themselves and it was a big hit.
Always write them a nice personal note. My child loves your class, you're a great teacher, etc.

Will you feel offended if a parent gifts you a modest amount (say $15 -%20) in a gift envelope?
Completely acceptable!
No food, no candles and no lotions please.

Not at all.

I don't know if offended is the right word. I might think you confused me for the babysitter.
That would certainly not be my intention. However, this is hard earned money for me, and I do not want to give anything to you that you would consider useless.
