Usually when people opt to retire early before they've earned their full pension it's because of health issues or they want to offer babysitting for their grandchildren or some other good reason. Sometimes they are just fed up and done, done, done with working. They value their freedom more than a higher retirement check.

I've known plenty of people who opted to retire early. It's not that unusual. I don't think I've ever known a person who regretted retiring early. I actually can't think of one person who has ever said that they wished that they had worked longer at their former job. I do know people who retired from one pension earning position and then got another pension earning position doing something completely different (ex: military to police officer or teacher).
