This was my first sign that something was "off" in the show.

But he shouldn't have really known anything past the fire station drop off right? He explained how the mom died, he dropped him off, then (loosely quoting) "a couple adopted him, and it seemed right."
But what seemed right? I don't think he would have known the story after the drop off.
Maybe foreshadowing for future episodes when we'll find out he was also at the hospital that day and knew about the situation with the parents losing the 3rd baby.
Seeing as how he said he didn't even remember dropping him at the fire station, this seems unlikely.

Maybe he was just nervously giving details that are unimportant, like I tend to do
This. Sounded like nervous rambling to me!

This. Obviously, given that the wife responded, I don't care about the Amex!
I think the wife might work with him. I could've sworn he said, "clear my schedule, babe" when he went to find his birth dad but I could've totally misheard.

(Also couldn't believe she wouldn't have a section but figured tv was asking us to suspend our disbelief.) Figured it out when the guy said a baby had been left at the fire station and then lit a cigarette, but had no idea before that.
Tough thing for me to buy: the birth dad is so well spoken and lovely, which seems odd for an addict who spent much of his life on the streets. Will this part go another direction as well? Maybe they'll tell us how he pulled himself up or something? Sort of weird.
I disagree. Real people have dimension. We still don't know what the father's background was before he started using. Plenty of people with "normal" lives end up as addicts.
Absolutely. Especially these days with addiction frequently stemming from prescriptions. But in the 70s, drug addiction and life on the streets probably didn't affect educated adults that frequently, no? I admit little understanding of the addictive drug culture before 80s coke, so I could be totally off base. I'm just thinking that whatever killed the guy's mom and left his dad homeless wasn't your 70s pot/LSD. Maybe I'm way off base.

I'm sure there was plenty of news coverage. I used to know a woman who was abandoned in a church by her birth mother and she had all kinds of news clippings about the story and her eventual adoption.
But how did he know who the birth mother and birth father were?
Who? I'm not following your question.
Randall, the baby who was left at the fire station. He said his mother was a junkie who died. How does he know this information? If he was left at a fire station, how does he know who his bio mother is? How would he be able to give enough information about his bio father to a private investigator so that the PI could find him? How does he know ANY info about his bio father? The father said he didn't even remember leaving him at the fire station, so it's not like he was caught by the police after the fact.
I don't know how he would know exactly who it is (except maybe the news) but I would imagine he would have come in crack addicted and thus have eventually been told some details. (Minus the died in childbirth thing)
Well that was the private detectives job in the beginning. He was on the case for some time then emailed Randall. He had maybe tracked the mother first. Death/birth records. And then interviewed family for clues on her boyfriend/husband's name.
But how would he be able to track the mother at all? If the baby was born that day and left at a fire station, obviously she didn't give birth in a hospital. It doesn't make sense.
