And your view of the "homophobic attitude in the African American community" is just as offensive and narrow minded as the individuals you are talking about. This may have to do with their religion but nothing to do with them being Black. Or do you also believe in this "persuasive homophobic attitude" for the many millions in the country of other races that feel the same way?

I'm black and also gay. I think it's a fair statement to say the religious black community as a whole is very homophobic. Look at the idiot pastor of the church in Beltsville MARYLAND who's going nuts againts gay marriage in DC. The bible talks about divorce and fornication being a sin,yet I don't see him doing much about that. Yet he feels to need to go out of his state and protest this? Half his church members are out screwing anyone they want yet that's okay. I'd have more respect for people like him if they didn't pick and choose what they wanted to belive in the bible.

I don't disagree that there are Black homophobic people out there. Plenty, I'm sure. I just don't believe it's because they're Black. It makes sense to me that it's a religious thing. I think it's ridiculous, but I'm not very religious. And I also completely agree with you on people picking and choosing what they want to believe from the bible. And I also believe a lot of it is generational. I am Black and in my upper 20's, born and raised in this area. I don't know a single person, that is anti-gay. It's a non-issue.

So maybe it's more fair to say that extremely religious people tend to be bigots and that black people tend to lean towards religions that are homophobic? The truth is that as a gay person, I expect another black person who attends a AME church to be a homophobe and I am usually right.

Do some research on what percentage of inner city blacks vote as opposed to the white population in DC. That should explain a lot.

NP here. Please, read the poll data. The vast majority of whites in DC (something like 80%) support same-sex marriage. The majority of blacks in DC oppose it. It's a reality.

Everyone who is bringing up the bible.... Isn't it true that the bible admonishes against gay male sex but says nothing about lesbianism?

I'm sorry that your family had to be exposed to that kind of small minder thinking. It's that kind of thinking that creates the strife everywhere today amd it's the thinking that has been the cause of all of the tragedies in history. Bottom line is who knows exactly what God (or whatever title you personally choose) wants? Biblical scriptures are only as valid as the translation that is given. It's perfectly fine for that woman in the store to have her opinion, but she's not God's mouthpiece. No one is. I think that the very idea of God judging anyone for anything is flawed. If God is love, then God wouldn't need to judge. We judge what we fear, and when we fear anything, it takes us out of love. The opposite of love is fear, so if God is love, then there is no need for God to judge. I realize that may sound a little out there, but it makes sense to me. There really isn't enough love in the world, so why couldn't the grocery store lady have just kept her mouth shut? How does the romantic life of a fellow shopper affect her? It doesn't. And what about the little boy? Did that woman even consider the impact that her tirade could have on him? I'm a married lady and I have a teenage daughter and we have discussed her orientation. She's not interested in boys or girls yet that she's aware of, but she knows that I just want her to be happy. I think that the most important thing in the world is to love others and be loved. I only care that my child is loved. She asked me if I would freak if she were a lesbian, and I didn't even hesitate when I said "no" because it's true. I wouldn't freak. I live in a city that is harshly critical of all lifestyles that vary from the "norm" and I never want her to feel like she can't be who she is or loves who she wants to love. People have no right to impose their own narrow views of what God wants on anyone. The people who feel the need to publically voice their views (especially in front of a child!) need to understand that the attitude that they have only pushes them further from God. People need to stop putting human constraints on God, because they just don't apply. Human charactor flaws are for us humans. We deal with them and we learn through them (hopefully) but they simply don't apply to God because God is love. Sorry for the rant, but I found the grocery store lady super offensive. I grew up in a home that was seriously lacking in love, but I had the traditional mom and dad, but you know what? I was completely miserable. If I could have traded that in for a home filled with love for each other and safety and respect and honest joyfullness, I wouldn't have cared what gender my parents were. FWIW, if I had been there, I most definitely would have spoken up or at least offered to keep your little one company while you totally ripped the opinionated lady a new butthole!

Generalizations are just that--general. You CANNOT apply them to individuals, and I get so mad when people get offended because they assume you are applying them to individuals. If I say, "in general, fish are good eating," I really am talking in general. I don't mean that the salmon over there that has been sitting out too long is specifically good, or the puffer fish here which might kill me is specifically good, or the rockfish there with its head still attached and creeps me out is specifically good. But the existence of some cases that do not live up to the generalization does not mean the generalization is wrong.

Obviously, whether fish ARE good eating is a matter of opinion, and other generalizations can be matters of fact, but that also does not change that they are still true generalizations (and cannot and should not be applied to individual cases).

Do you read the Sesame Street Bible? The version I remember is convoluted and vague.
