It's not. You'd need more like 600k just to have the lifestyle you have now. More than that obv to have any kind of increase. Look at the col calculators. Look at what housing, taxes, and commute cost. Look at how LONG commutes are in "affordable" tristate towns.

I'm not saying there is not something appealing about living in that area but I'd only do it at an income closer to 7 figures. You will inevitably come into contact with lots of finance families and their annual bonuses will be more than your whole income. It will make you feel poor.

Biggest question is where is your husband commuting to? Would you be commuting as well? Commuting makes all the difference about where to live.

My college best friend married guy and moved to Manhattan. I stay at her place (she now lives in Caribbean)... but keeps her NYC place. Hers is 2 bedroom 3 bath (unheard of in NYC) and beautiful views of everything .. high floor and doorman building. I see families in there .. upper west side (best family place). Back 10 years ago, she paid 6-7k a month in mortgage, maintenance, cable, etc.

No idea what that place would go for now.. she bought in 97.

No car, etc ... so factor in all the activities, meals, etc in NYC. Nice dinner for 2 runs about $300 with wine.


We lived in Morristown NJ and I commuted in... moved there in 2004 and houses were about 600k to start. We couldn't afford and moved into 450k condo. Taxes, as you know are unbelievable.. I think ours were 6k a year.

I would say 1.5 million is cheapest to live in NYC for family on home... 700-800k is probably cheapest home near NYC (not in most expensive areas.. they are way more). Nannies, babysitters, food, car insurance, everything else is crazy high.

Go online and look at houses.. that will give you idea of what your mortgage (biggest expense) will be. I think you will be fine o 500k a year... but won't live like your rich, for sure.

Long Island is a dump. It is one long Annandale. Yuck!

Ha! I agree with you re the Hamptons. Way too muckety-muck for me.

But I have met many wonderful people and been to many beautiful homes on the Sound side of the island. I thought those areas were absolutely lovely. Nothing against the south side of the island it is just that I haven't been there at all except to the icky outer end where the Hamptons are.

Honestly, I have never understood why so many people from LI act/sound embarrassed to say that is where they are from. It really has a lot to offer and the Sound is just beautiful.

A lot!! Clearly, you've never been there, and you're not missing much. Long Island is one big strip mall. Characterless. Charmless. The people are rough around the edges, to put it politely. I believe everyone on the show Jersey Shore was actually from Long Island.
