Subject: How can 20 somethings in college/right out of college afford to live in 2k a month buildings in DC?
No financial assistance. DH made $62K, and we lived downtown silver spring on his one salary while I studied for the bar. We were 24. Didn't have much furniture to start, and we didn't eat out nearly as much. Those were fun times! Less bills, that's for sure!

it's a small percentage, but DC has thousands of 20-somethings earning 160k+ (now 180k+) as law firm associates. Add that to the thousands of 20-somethings earning 60-100k as consultants, engineers, analysts, sales reps.

+1. Most of my friends made 50-70k when we were in our mid 20s. (We're late 20s now and hitting 100k)

My 22 year old computer programmer son makes $78,000. Lots of kids come out of college making a decent amount.
I made $160K as a 24 yr old (but was paying 2K a month in student loans. typical law school grad)
But really, many professional entry-level jobs in DC pay about 60K. Consulting, biglaw paralegal, etc.

Any CS student can pull that staright out of college 60-70 easy
Anyone in Finance can pull that again 60-70 easy
Anyone in Government Consulting can pull that (They even hire English majors :-p) I got paid 52 coming out in 2003 with an undergrad at age 21 its 2016 now easily in the 60-70 range as well
Sure you don't make that on the hill or in non-profits but
Also you can make 100k in any of these careers in 3-5 years if you switch companies and/or get your promotions on time
125k by 30 is extremely common around here.... but then I feel like most people hit a wall..... still HHI of 250k is pretty standard for DC with two people going to college
I've noticed this too. A lot of people who leave undergrad with shockingly high salaries seem to cap out shockingly low, in the low to mid $100s, too. I have found that highly compensated 22 year olds don't necessarily make highly compensated 35 year olds. Sure, superstar exceptions are in every field, but a lot of the jobs that pay well (computer science, engineering, and so on) really lend themselves to a lot of outsourcing to India and other places.

My husband's consulting firm hires 10-15/yr straight out of undergrad. He started at 60K and that was 10 years ago. So add the consultants and other professional services firms that hire fresh new faces and make them work ungodly hours to the list.

I hire 5 or 10 a year. This year they are starting at $65K plus bonus - engineering degrees

If you look at the reviews of many of these newer buildings you will see residents complaining about the under 25 year olds having loud rooftop pool parties, playing loud music at all hours of the night, passing out and vomiting in the hallways and elevators.
So you mean to tell me this is what you were doing as a 22 year old?
This is exactly what I was doing at 22, and I was holding down a full time job at the same time.
Me, too, but I was doing it with four roommates in a 5-bedroom house in Friendship Heights.
