I always think it's a weird question when people ask if I made things "from scratch". Simply complementing them and asking "did you make these?" is enough. I guess that's because to me when someone says "from scratch" it sounds like they think that that's the way that I SHOULD have made them. Either way I never care enough to get offended.

I would not be ashamed to admit that I had made the brownies from a box, but it's still rude call her out like that in front of all her other guests. I am guessing you have a history of being uncouth, which is probably why she rolled her eyes while giving her friend a knowing glance.
Being blunt is not something to pride yourself on, necessarily. Some things just don't need to be said. There is a fine line between being straightforward and simply being rude.
