Um, we would love an au pair but couldn't afford a 4th bedroom (family of 5 here)... And au pair need their own bedroom and I think own bathroom?

The nanny might have been cheaper bc it was a shorter duration than mortgage on a bigger house.

This budget should be very easily doable even with vacations.

So you both work long hours and only make 300K. You are doing something wrong.

A mortgage payment under 4k in n arlington is pretty low.

There are plenty of working moms in No. Arlington. I'm a working mom (and a MONA member) who lives in N. Arlington. People regularly post questions about nanny shares on the MONA listserv. You might want to try that.
