I like smaller hotels. For our honeymoon we stayed at Amuleto in Zihuatanejo, Mexico - it was amazing.

Ha, I posted a couple of hotels up thread without specifying this but this thread did make me feel poor too. Almost all of the amazing hotels I have stayed in were either a) for work, b) on points accrued by work trips, or c) fabulous hotels in a seasonal or very random location where we went off season and got a great deal. We have splurged for a couple of fancy resorts but those are few and far between and involved a lot of saving (and several were on our honeymoon). Generally yes, this thread makes me feel poor too though.



I will add though, on the occasions where we have been able to swing an amazing hotel somewhere, it has made a huge difference to the whole trip - particularly where the hotel has had amazing amenities. Would that I could afford to stay in a FS everywhere I go (but I cannot). By contrast when we stay somewhere more middle of the road (often determined by points) we definitely spend less time in the hotel. That works better in some locations (city with lots of sightseeing) than it does in others (beach resort where you may want to get out and see stuff, but may also want to enjoy the hotel amenities).

We are like PP and are usually using points or staying off season, but a nice place with great service (or something else that really sets it apart - e.g. location) definitely makes a big difference in the experience.

FS Carmelo (don't think it's a FS anymore)
FS Ritz Chicago
Sofitel DC (the hotel is fine but it was one of the most comfortable hotel rooms and beds I have ever stayed in)

We also stayed in some completely amazing resorts/camps in Africa and Australia but those were more about the entire experience.

Last year I stayed in the ITC Chola in Chennai. Every day housekeeping left me an animal made from towels. I really loved them and left notes so it seemed he try to outdo himself every day. The last day there was an alligator the length of the bed with rose petals for the scales.

I know people here hate India but the hospitality can't be beat.


The ITC Sheraton Agra or whatever it is called is also unreal. They have a bath menu and will come draw you a totally over the top bath with pillows and candles. We were all upgraded to two room suites with massage chairs, aromatherapy options, a wellness selection of snacks (complimentary) and not just robes and slippers but also super soft pjs.
