This is dumb. You sound scatterbrained. Let this one time serve as a warning. There are some things that as an adult, you cannot "forget". This is one of them.

Maybe manufactures should create some sort of alarm or notification that sounds on the fob when it is separated from the car a good distance. Or maybe someone could create an app for this?

We have a Prius and it's incredibly quiet, even when the gas engine is running. If there is nobody else around, you'd hear it. But if I'm getting out of the car and other people are talking and making noise, it would be easy to miss that the car is still running.

Op thanks for posting. Seriously I think people underestimate how easy it is for things like this to happen. You may have saved a life by your confession. Good reminder for everyone.
Write a letter to your car manufacturer, the NTSB, etc. about what happened. They need to hear more choices to improve the safety system on these new keyless cars.

Not to mention my car (a Honda) beeps really loudly if you walk away with the "key" while the car is still on. It's louder than a crying kid.

If you are stressed/distracted by young kids, sleep deprived etc. -- just get in the habit of parking on the driveway or in the street. Why add one more safety thing to worry about when you can leave the car outdoors?
