Sure. Harvard opens plenty of slots for athletes, legacies, musicians, artists, activists, writers, legacies, building funders, legacies, etc. See 2015 enrolled class profile below. Yes, this is from Harvard CDC.

3.75-4.00 87.4%
3.50-3.74 8.8%
3.25-3.49 2.5%
3.00-3.24 1.0%
2.50-2.99 0.3%

White, unhooked DD got into H and Y, in addition to a bunch of other Ivies. And not STEM.

No it's not, my niece got in.

My white, unhooked DD got into a "top" Ivy.

STEM major?

So, no, your above average student will not get in. It does not matter if he has "great" ECs, for everybody, and especially for a not-so-perfect student, you need to have world-class ECs to differentiate yourself from the scores of others who all look exactly the same on paper.

And what is a real "world class" EC?

I have no issues with well qualified URM's gaining admission to top universities. I admit to some ire, however, when obviously privileged hooked candidates (big money, connections) get in above my own kid when there is a big discrepancy in high school grades and test scores. Nothing I can do about it but it's frustrating for my kid to see.

Not with all the prepping that's done nowadays. That ship has sailed!

Lots of evidence that prepping helps a little (30-60 points). Most of the gain is probably just natural improvement from taking it a second time. I'd be interested to see if correlation to IQ decreases with more repeats; IQ tests aren't valid if taken closer together than a year.
