After the fact, I thought I could have asked something like this.. but because I was so shocked and unsure of what to do/say, I just quickly walked out. I know she saw me and am pretty sure she knows I caught her.. just so awkward and I am at a loss of what her purpose was.

She probably needed a mint or kleenex or chapstick or lotion. God I've done this I know I have in the past. Just needed something real bad.

This is such a weird thing to say. For some reason, it gives me chills. You are very bizarre.

You're telling me if you were with your bestie out somewhere she stepped away you sneeze you have booger face she has tissues you wouldn't grab one? Please.

Yes, possibly for a tissue, but NOT for a mint, lotion, or chapstick: it is so creepy that you mentioned those things. The "Just needed something real bad" explanation for snatching those items from someone else's purse is so, so weird and disturbing, and just a really bizarre thing to say in this context.

As well she should be. What's your point? Let it go because she feels the appropriate consequence of her behavior? OP is owed an apology and a promise it won't happen again.

Well yes an apology would be appropriate but not likely. A promise that it won't happen again will mean nothing. She'll snoop sometime else.

I'd bring it up and let the chips fall where they may. I set my boundaries. People don't have to like them, but they will know what they are.

Bringing it up now is pointless and will only cause drama. You missed your opportunity by not saying something when you saw her. If you ask do you really expect for you to tell you the truth? She's just going to say she was looking for a Kleenex or whatever. Not why she was really snooping. Then you're going to feel dumb for bringing it up. It's not like she's going to say she has a hunch you're a junkie and was looking for heroin.

Yeah--and if she walked in and saw me, I'd explain...not drop her purse like a hot potato. See the difference?

And yeah...using someone else's Chapstick? Disgusting. There is no such thing as a Chapstick emergency.

Your MIL crossed a major boundary by digging around in your purse. You were unsure of what to say at the time. However, several days later, you continue to ponder it instead of telling your husband since he will probably call you a liar.

All three of you are strange.

There is no such thing as a "mint emergency." If you need something, ASK.

I've only done that with very close relatives and closest BFs.

Do tthis. it's a nicer way to call her out. even if she says she needed some aspirin she knows you know.

I would have prob walked out right away too, it's a defense mechanism I have when weird stuff like that happens....

Yeah, PP, maybe next time you'll just help yourself to money if you need it "real bad."

I'd put a loaded mousetrap in my purse the next time she's around and see what happens.
