In most parts of the country two teachers could live comfortably. DC is just nuts with cost of living and a general sense of entitlement.

When I was growing up in North Arlington in the 1970's, my dad was a teacher and my mom stayed home with us (until I was 10 and she went to work as a teacher). In those days, the house prices hadn't escalated to these ridiculous levels. Even with a lawyer husband I couldn't afford to buy in my old neighborhood now.

You realize there are tons of two-teacher or otherwise two-blue-collar households out there, right? Like, most of the country. Hell, in much of the country there is ONE blue collar worker and the other stays home.

I married someone who made under 80k, but had a good work ethic, which was also balanced with strong appreciation of family (so not working 90 hours a week). So for me, salary is not a deal breaker. Chronically under or unemployed is a dealbreaker, however, unless its a temporary and understandable circumstance. I'm not interested in dating someone who is still trying to figure out what color their parachute is at 45, or can't hold a job, or loses a job and retreats into video games and single malt.

DW here, 8 years ago when I met DH, salary wasn't a deal breaker for me, due to my lack of foresight. Little did I know that being the main breadwinner is going to be a bitch when children came into the picture, especially because I don't make five figures myself and DH makes way less.

If I had known then how much it would suck, I would have married someone with a high income potential. Just being honest

Most fast food employees are young. The older ones obviously are not dating your typical DCUMer. Some of them are between jobs, have addiction issues, dealt with adversity, or are simply from a modest walk of life where having a modest job is nothing to be ashamed of.

I can't express enough how out of touch people in DC are. There is a whole world of people that make under $40k per year and don't consider themselves poor or losers. Many of you would be at a loss to live outside of the affluent cocoons of DC/Boston/NYC/SF etc.


I know so many people in the retail industry who are in their 30s and 40s and 50s because of strange life circumstances.

Some are new immigrants with professional degrees from foreign countries that do not count here. They then take up a retail job to get some income on the side as they study to get a U.S. degree.

Others are have just been fired and are job hunting on the side.

Some do it professionally with hopes of being made manager.

I married potential and it worked out great in the end. It was rough during the PhD years. Having a useful degree was more important to me .
