People here are acting like squirrels, birds and deer don't already have free range to shit up their yards. My dog's poop that I pick up is completely different. I only allow my dog to pee in the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the road, which isn't owned by the homeowner anyways.

Exactly. Your dog is not everyone else's problem. They don't find it adorable when you let Fido poo where ever. And yes you can prevent him from going on someone's lawn
I am a dog owner too. Just not an entitled one.
Really? Prevent how?
How? Maybe you shouldn't own a dog.
No, no, you are the dog training expert here. Do tell how someone can prevent a dog from pooping when the dog has the urge.
You cannot drop that kind of stupid statement and then refuse to back it up.

I am a bit upset at myself for upsetting him, I generally dislike and avoid conflict at all cost. I suppose I will just not let my dogs cross over to the lawns anymore, we are new to the suburbs so I am not used to this environment. The guy was not super mean, I was just shocked a bit because people typically like me and I love being friendly with neighbors.
OP, the guy is obviously not a pet owner. Don't worry about it. As a dog owner, I can empathize with you. Sometimes nature calls and they will drop one in an inappropriate spot. You did the right thing by cleaning up. Don't let the guy bother you.
I'm a pet owner and if I see a walking dog shit on my property and no clean-up I have shouted out- WAIT Do you have a bag? Some one said NO and I said WAIT! I will get you bags for clean-up.
Why should people park on the street and step in shit? Or residue? I've seen a person let their dog lift it's leg on my trash can. I have a male dog and when we walk him he does mark so he gets yanked away from stuff. He also gets no walk if he hasn't shit. Except of course on his own yard.
