We said we hated them until we walked in and thought hmmm this is a lot of space and I can hide the kid crap downstairs and have a great adult looking, totally open top floor for less than a colonial. Sold!

We had a slightly bigger traditional 2 story before and used maybe 70% of the house. We use 100% of the space we have now and it's awesome.

Of course my Midwest parents had a heart attack when we bought it a few years ago - not because it's a split, but because it cost close to $1 million! But what are you going to do around here - Houses are expensive.

How are you all seeing the pictures of the house linked above? I can only see an overhead shot.

Love my split level. I grew up in a colonial and that was fine as well. I just prefer the open layout and lack of stairs in a split. Especially with young kids. I have never had to turn on a baby monitor in 5 years of having kids. I pretty much know where they are from any room in my house.

I'll bite. I grew up in a 1960s split around here (in the 1980s). I have fond memories of it and I think the layout was so much better than the townhouse I live in now with my own family, though the square footage is similar. If we ever move I'd happily buy a split.

We bought a 70s split level home in Potomac. From the outside it is pretty darn ugly, but its really nice inside. It only has a few steps down to the family room/office, and has 10 steps up to the third floor where the bedrooms are, so it doesn't feel like a traditional split level when you are inside.

Its what we could afford in this area, and we are really happy with it. If people think we are "the poors" so be it!

I know better than to post links on DCUM. Oh well! I think it's pretty (and certainly never noticed it's off center). But I also like ranches and mid century modern and a lot of the types of homes you see on the West Coast. You guys can fight over your brick colonials and cape cods.

They are cheapest to build , they suck

I lived in one for 10 years. We bought it because it was what we could afford in Bethesda - which has an abundance of split levels. We've since moved to a colonial but it took some time to adjust to all the stairs and the more closed in feeling. I've also lived in a ranch house because it was what I could afford and there is something to be said for one level living!

I still think about the split that got away. It was a 5-level split in Town of Vienna. We ended up in a (neo!)Colonial; I think I prefer the split format, especially with 5 levels.
