Let's have coffee." Instead, you gossip about this mom you've never met on an internet forum. You check with the other liberals to find out what the correct PC response is. The correct human response is to get to know the other family, particularly if they're new to the area. Have them over for dinner. Welcome them to DC.
yup! I loved church as a teen. As you get older you make your own decisions about religion.Anonymous wrote:My 13 year old has become really good friends with a girl who moved her from Kentucky. I'm sure her lifestyle in Kentucky is very different from the one we have here, so I'll admit I haven't been super excited about this new friendship. The girl invited my 13 year old to a church event this Friday called "night at the movies." I asked my daughter to find out what movie was being played and she told me "Unbroken." Is anyone familiar with this movie? Is it extremely religious? My daughter has never been to church and I honestly don't know that any of her other friends do either. My daughter is ibegging me to go, which of course makes me even more uncomfortable since she has never showed interest in any religious activities before. I sometimes wonder what this girl is telling my daughter to make her want go so bad. Am I overthinking this or should I just tell my daughter she can't go.

Are you by any chance Jewish?
Not OP, but are you by any chance an anti-Semite? Contrary to your apparent perception, Jews are not really concerned about our kids being converted by proselytizing Christians. We're more concerned about them being around bigots.
Do you think that OP is a bigot?
I'm the PP that you are asking this question of. It's hard to tell from OP's post if he/she is a bigot. She said the thing about "assuming a very different lifestyle", which does seem to convey a lot of pre-judgement.
I'm not defending OP. I'm calling out an inappropriate comment.
The "are you by any chance Jewish?" thing is inappropriate because it came out of nowhere --- OP said nothing at all about being Jewish. I don't know that what's going on in PP's mind, but he/she did seem to lead with that question out of nowhere, which --- in my personal experience of dealing with anti-Semitic people --- can be a clue. Kind of like when people relate a story about someone and lead with the fact, apropos of nothing, that they are African American --- "So my son has this Black teacher, and the Black teacher said...". I would start to assume that that person is a racist. Similarly, when someone asks, apropos of nothing and in a way clearly intended to be critical (i.e. right after saying "you are embarrassing yourself"), "Are you Jewish?" it makes me very uncomfortable, because in my direct personal experience it can lead to an at best uncomfortable and at worst dangerous situation.
I am the pp who asked if the op was Jewish. Please forgive the faux pas - I am, in fact, Jewish! I am often embarrassed by my own family members who identify everyone as Jewish or non-Jewish and DEFINITELY would object to a Jewish kid attending an event sponsored by a church youth group. I KNOW this is not incredibly unusual in the Jewish community. This is one aspect of Jewish culture that I have trouble with - but I don't think I am anti-Semitic. My post might have been inappropriate but I assure you I am not dangerous.
LOL. Sorry... I may be too touchy about this.

Oh, the irony. I can feel it in the air.
