You are as bad as OP? You are also stereotyping with the "you check with other liberals" part of your post. Are all liberals judgmental, anti-religion? I consider myself a liberal and would happily send my child to a church function with a friend. I also would not have mentioned they were from Kentucky (1) because it doesn't matter, and (2) because that and stating when the church function is and the movie the church is showing probably could easily identify the family to those in their circle. Hopefully the child's mom doesn't read this post.

I was raised orthodox Jewish and I understood where the question was coming from -- Jewish families generally try hard to avoid situations where Christian proselytizing is a possibility.
Most Jewish friends I have would be explicit about it.
My parents were borderline hysterical about keeping me away from Christian messages.

I'm the PP that you are asking this question of. It's hard to tell from OP's post if he/she is a bigot. She said the thing about "assuming a very different lifestyle", which does seem to convey a lot of pre-judgement.

The "are you by any chance Jewish?" thing is inappropriate because it came out of nowhere --- OP said nothing at all about being Jewish. I don't know that what's going on in PP's mind, but he/she did seem to lead with that question out of nowhere, which --- in my personal experience of dealing with anti-Semitic people --- can be a clue. Kind of like when people relate a story about someone and lead with the fact, apropos of nothing, that they are African American --- "So my son has this Black teacher, and the Black teacher said...". I would start to assume that that person is a racist. Similarly, when someone asks, apropos of nothing and in a way clearly intended to be critical (i.e. right after saying "you are embarrassing yourself"), "Are you Jewish?" it makes me very uncomfortable, because in my direct personal experience it can lead to an at best uncomfortable and at worst dangerous situation.
