I agree with the Boy in the striped Pajama. It is on the same page as Diary of Ann Frank. Book Thief would follow.

I like lately funny/sad comedies with just a right balance of both so you can laugh a lot and cry a little.

The Grave of the Fireflies.

During WWII bombings of Tokyo, a boy flees with his little sister (their mother dies from her injuries, the father is away at war). They seek shelter in the countryside at a relative's home, but the boy feels unwelcome there and makes the rash decision to leave with his sister. They survive for a little while in the woods until they start feeling the effects of starvation. The rest is heartbreaking.

One of my parents is Japanese. This movies makes me cry every time. It's about pride and responsibility and young innocence.

The Sessions (If you need a good cry, watch this one. Not sad so much as just really, really moving for so many reasons. I had to go sit on my porch by myself and cry for half an hour afterward.
