how big the kitchen? unless you have a huge kitchen I'd probably go for a smaller size tile - 2x4

It's funny-- while I agree that it's a fad, for some reason having all white cabinets and a wood tone island looks nice to me, but that example of all wood tone cabinets with a white island looks terrible.

+1 We have the dark island, light perimeter cabinets but I really don't like the reverse. I like the dark island because those cabinets take much more of a beating between it being my primary prep space w/ the sink and dishwasher plus being where the kids sit and inevitably kick. So, the dark cabinets are very functional since they don't show the dirt as much as the cream would. But an all dark kitchen would be too dark for me. I know the two-tone kitchens are kind of trendy right now but the kitchen we replaced had dark bottom cabinets and white top cabinets dating back to at least the 1950s or 60s.

Subway tiles have been around for 100 years! How can that be considered trendy?

Because up until now, they've only been used for subways or bathrooms. It's still weird to me to see them in kitchens.

We have the same setup! I plan to do marble. (Pale, gray and white)

Well, I think all the different options posted here have demonstrated at least one thing to me personally: you can do a lot worse than subway tile! I pretty much visually can't handling anything other than single-color, uniform tiles/ materials. Anything else just looks extraordinarily busy or lugubrious.

I don't care for those glass tiles either but I'm having a hard time finding any backsplash I like. We recently bought a house that was Tuscan and if it were 2002, I'd be happy with it. But it looks outdated to me and I'm in the middle of completely de-Tuscanizing it. Big job. Going to paint the cabinets and replace the tumbled tile backsplash asap though agree with PP, I really think it needs to be gutted, I just can't spend $50,000 right now. I prefer the hand cut subway to regular and really like large arabesque tiles but fear they'll last a hot minute.

I agree that subway tiles look like commercial bathrooms. I think they're going to look like shag carpeting in a few years.

The larger glass tiles (subway tile size) look good (simple, clean, modern).
The long thin strip pattern looks too busy.

I am not a fan of the tuscan look.

We just had our kitchen remodeled, stone gray cabinets with white quartz and white subway tile with gray grout. We incorporated color with the kitchen curtains, kitchenware and appliances. I like the contemporary look of it, doesn't bother me that people hate subway tile. You don't have to live or eat here, I do.

Glass tile is fine, just not my style and I think it makes kitchens look a bit "stock", if that makes any sense. Like Home Depot or Ikea.

We are looking at subtle 4x4 or 6x6 tiles. Any thoughts on size and square layout versus diamond shape?

In that 4th picture above, instead of having random plants above that huge skylight, imagine having an herb garden and lettuces!
