I know a lady who was one of the top ten sellers for Stella & Dot a few years ago. This woman is gorgeous, bubby, worked her ass off, did parties every weekend, knew tons of people, etc. Definitely one of the few who you'd expect would be making the big bucks, and her FB statuses also gave that impression. She quit abruptly because apparently S&D changed the commission structure and screwed a lot of people at the top, including her. Another of my friends was considering signing up, so I asked the former rep what she thought about it. Former rep told me flat-out that no matter how hard you work at S&D, you will NEVER make more than $2-$3k per month. It's just not possible, given the commission structure and the amount of jewelry the reps have to buy, etc. Plus, the amount of hours she was putting in were absolutely insane. She probably did 2-3 shows every weekend, which is way more than most reps would ever be able to book. I don't know about anyone else, but if I needed an extra $2-3k per month, I'd work at Starbucks or something before I'd go into MLM, but whatever. I have no idea how much she netted overall, but I'm guessing it wasn't a particularly impressive figure.

My parents are the only people who bought Cutco knives from my brother when he sold them as a high schooler nearly 20 years ago...but they're still using some of those knives!

DC Law firm secretary did Stella Dot. She lived in the MD suburbs. I bought to try to be supportive.

My college friend sold Cutco, at age 40 and after she got a PhD and had a FT job. I bought out of friendship but was astounded she was selling this.

My sister knows a lady who does sex toys parties in dc and the burbs and she makes tons of money. Tons (my sister said she pockets well over $1k from each party, and she's basically doing this for pocket money and vacations since her husband makes a good living). She's a SAHM and limits herself to one or two parties a week (in the evenings when her husband is home to watch the kids).

If proactive is so successful, why are the "inventors" selling R+F via MLM??

Also, I remember going to a pampered chef party 10 years ago or so and the woman actually showed us her last few pay hecks. So they must be encouraged to do it...

I know 2 people in the DC suburbs who sell this stuff, one is a SAHM in Burke who does some children's book thing and Jamberry and is super annoying about it, and the other lives in Woodbridge and does Mary Kay but only sells to her friends/family and is never pushy. I hate to feed into the stereotypes but most people I know who do the MLM's live in economically not great areas in the Midwest so their options for jobs are basically retail, trying to sell crafts on Etsy, or MLM's. It is definitely sad and a sign of our times.

I know a few people in the Potomac area who do it, and they're not SAHMs (yet) though one in particular is especially vocal about how she wants to quit her corporate job. On FB. With coworkers on there.

The one I know who is craziest about it does things like this, usually via FB:

RF nutjob: Hey, looks cool that you took your kids camping/got your hair colored/bought a new house/won the Nobel Prize! (insert mundane question)
you: answer, thinking she actually cares
RF nutjob: Hey, while we're talking...

SO TRANSPARENT! do they think we don't KNOW they're doing this from a script?

Anyone heard of LIMU blue frog? My mom and her friend are shilling this "natural" energy drink MLM. Everything on her friend's Facebook page is about LIMU. Why would you make an energy drink into an MLM? If it was actually good, why wouldn't you just sell it on the open market like other drinks?

The damn conferences and kits are going to eat you alive.

That was always my impression as well. If you don't get too deep into it and if you build up a decent customer base, you can make some extra money. Otherwise, it's a giant crock and you will probably lose money.

And some of them like Amway are virtual cults, supporting political causes I find terrible.
