From what I've heard from him and what I've read, a 2 carat will seem smaller because of the cut, H color is best for an Asscher cut, stick with VS2 clarity because the SI1 & SI2 are not recommended with steep cuts like an Asscher.
I want to get a 2.5-3 carat. I looked on " sites" and have been shopping around with jewelers. I found majority of these diamonds to be in the 20-45k range. I will be proposing next month on vacation. I have a little time to shop still.

I don't know about the pawning aspect of this, but a too-big diamond will make it look like she's a second wife. I have a very beautiful 1.5 engagement ring that I still get comments on (very good clarity and color) and a 6-carat 10-year anniversary ring, and I wouldn't change a thing about either.

Mine is a high quality round solitaire, about 1ct. I wouldn't want much bigger or flashier. The bigger stone doesn't mean you love her more. Knowing what she likes is more important.

Uhhh a 30k 3 ct ring is most likely high quality
No it isn't. A high quality 3 carat diamond costs a lot more than $30k.
I just did a quick search. For one with good color (F), decent clarity (VVS2) and only good for the cut, it is $68k. And that isn't even a high quality 3 carat asscher b/c of the cut. Cut and color are most important and the cut of that one is average, not ideal or very good. Diamond prices increase exponentially, not in a straight line.
