Hill Street Blues is the theme. You can check it out on YouTube. It was driving me crazy trying to place where I knew it from! Thank you to the person who posted the answer! Now I can stop obsessing about it. It was a terrific theme song, too, from a great TV show!

OP again, wow this TOTALLY sounds just like it. But I don’t remember anyone in my house ever watching 8 Is Enough. Maybe I was just too little to remember (born 1982).


Wow. you're right. The first 5-7 seconds sounds exactly like Chicago

This is the OP! I love that this comes up from time to time and that people have the same nagging feeling as I do!

I still am not 100% satisfied, but I believe the themes from MASH and Family Ties may have melded in my mind with Chicago. Turns out there are a LOT of theme songs from the 80s with extremely similar sounds.

That song was a semi-hit in its own right. Played on the radio, etc. "Believe it or Not (I'm Walking on Air)" Much more cheerful than that Chicago song. Agree with other posters who say the think its whiny.
