This. Is it even legal for a child that age to be unattended? Think of all the stories in the area lately, the kids in Silver spring walking home, the toddlers left in the car while the parents went wine tasting, etc. I cannot believe this happened. Holy MF shit.

Yes, they all have a little room full of arcade games. IIRC, most of the games are for older kids (kids that don't less supervision).

That occurred to me, too: Movie theatres and malls are not public spaces where kids can be left unattended; they're private businesses. I'm also surprised that in two whole hours, no staffer at the theatre noticed and spoke to the kid to ask who he was supposed to be with and what movie his family or group was attending. I"ve seen it happen -- kids older than the OP's son being approached and questioned by theatre staff because no adult was anywhere in sight. Frankly I'd probably contact that theatre's manager and talk to him about how the staff failed to notice an unattended eight-year-old -- they could have brought your son to the management office to call you , or gone into the theatre and pulled out that idiot mom to make her take your son inside. (I suspect they would have done those things before progressing to calling any cops.)

Yes, the responsibility lies with the host mom and not the theatre -- but she truly is not ever going to listen to anything you say, and alerting the theatre to its laxness might at least have some effect so that in the future, other unattended kids aren't left to wander around there and possibly wander outside. Again, this is on that mom but it's no use trying to make her see she was wrong.


It doesn't surprise me, to be honest. Most theater employees are high school kids. The lobby is almost always busy, depending on the number of screens and staggered movie times. But the host parent absolutely should be responsible for an 8 year old and not let the kid stay in the lobby for 2 hours.

Forgot to add we are talking EIGHT DOLLARS here. It's hardly like a plane ticket..this woman does not deserve the privilege of being in charge of any kids including her own if she would do something like that. Outrageous.

WAIT A HOT MINUTE. Your son is invited to a PARTY and they did pay for his ticket???? That is insane. I never give my kids money to go to a party..why would I ? Everything is paid for thats why its called a party.

I would be on the phone in 2 seconds flat giving this woman a piece of mind. I am really hoping this post is a prank of some sort, it cannot be real??? If it is you MUST call her and tell her how out of line she was on every count!!!!!!

I have an 8 year old. I can't imagine ever leaving one of his friends unattended. I'd freak out from the stress of it.
