Jeez. My whole life I grew up having and throwing parties with no theme whatsoever other than "It's my birthday."

Dammit. I'm so tacky.

I like both ideas. I like Pinterest too, but I'm not crafty enough to create anything I see on there so I've kept all my kid's parties simple. The only one to complain is my friend, but she's a chronic complainer anyway, lol!

If anything is tacky, then it's your friend. She should keep her mouth shut.

Do you think the kids cared? No, they were just angling to get the piece with the most icing on it.

I love her creativity! She sounds like my daughter!

It can be hard to find a cake that matches the theme of the party unless your theme is really generic or you spend a lot of money on a custom cake.

The year we had a bounce house party (theme: yo gabba gabba), my daughter asked for a princess cake. When we had a nature center party (theme: turtles), my daughter wanted a "Brave" cake. The year we had an Imagination Stage party (theme: dinosaurs, to match the show), my daughter wanted a Barbie cake. The year we had a roller skating party, my daughter wanted a ballerina cake. She's the boss.

I'm having a hobbit cake at a mad science party and putting lego candles in it. That should make your friend's head explode.
