My 6th grader falls asleep between 10:30 - 11:00, and is up at 8:00 AM. Most nights, we aren't home until 9:30, and shower, snack, then bed.

Similar. Must wake up at 6:30am. I like her in bed at 9am, but she stays up until 10pm, reading or doing HW in bed.

I do think 11pm is way too late. My 7th and 5th graders are in bed by 9. 7th grader is at 6:30, younger one is up at 7:00.

If they aren’t tired, they can read a book. No electronics or leaving their rooms past bedtime unless they need something (glass of water etc)- they are not allowed to get up and watch the or do other things. Both seem to fall asleep quickly most nights.

Yep. Honestly, it's starting to seem early to me too but he's always been a kid who slept at LOT (as a toddler he'd sleep 12 hours straight at night and take a 3 hr afternoon nap), and he's asleep within 5 minutes of lights-out so it works for us. Of course, on weekends he's often up later but still only sleeps until 6:30 or so.

My 6th grade boy wants to go to bed later and later, which I'm not happy about. He's currently going to bed around 11 pm and waking up about 8:30 for DL which starts at 8:45. All of our schedules are off during the pandemic.

I have twins in 6th grade. They are currently doing hybrid school- so they wake up 3x/wk at 7:15 and 2x/wk at 6:30.

Bedtime is 9:30 on school nights. They are welcome to read etc quietly in their rooms if they aren’t tired (I don’t micromanage but they have no electronics access, so nothing exciting to be doing that would keep them up)

On weekends they go to bed whenever they like. DH and I are usually in bed by 11. They tend to head to bed when we do, but occasionally will stay up watching tv or a movie if they want to.

In bed by 9 or so but frequently reads or does other quiet things till 11 or so. He has always been a night owl and though we have tried, moving up his bedtime has not worked. One good thing about distance learning - it does make getting to class on time easier!

On the weekend, I'm ok with a later bedtime. Do other parents of similarly aged kids enforce an earlier bedtime during the week? And what do you do if your child resists the earlier bedtime? tIA.

My son used to go to sleep at about 9 pm, But since then I have tested out the 11 o clock bedtime and he has been was more alert and it seems his grades have improved. It seems that when he talks to his friends he is less stressed out during the day, as most of his friends let their kids be awake at 11 Pm By the way, he wakes up at 9.

8 to 9 hours of sleep for my 5h grader.... rarely more than that, unless it is weekend when she oversleeps.

Our third grader sleeps 10p to 8a. I think 10 hours of sleep is average for 8-12 year olds.

Ok so it’s not. The science is wrong on that, and they should be able to sleep when they like

I have 11yo twins. They get up at 6:45. We do “in bed” at 8:30 with lights out at 9:30. They are allowed to read or even hang out quietly during that time. No electronics in their rooms. My DS often falls asleep quickly but DD is usually still awake for lights out at 9:30.

I think it’s reasonable to enforce some sort of “quiet time, reading time, no electronics” etc but obviously you can’t force a kid to sleep. I figure if they are in their rooms etc they will fall asleep if they need to- to a point.

Clearly there are lots of nights where 8:30 just isn’t possible..but if there isn’t a late practice or game that is what we shoot for.

My 9 & 11 year olds go to bed between 8 and 8:30. They don't complain about it because they are tired by then. We don't vary on the weekend. They tend to get up really early on the weekends because that's when they are allowed their electronic time.
