Was the baby alone? did the baby order a beer via baby signs? Was the baby in a bugaboo? That might be the correct height to reach the bar.

This is a not afraid to have a life thing. Bars, now without smoking, are pretty much the same as church as far as baby safety is concerned. I assume they weren't passing the baby around to random strangers.

FWIW, on the second day home from the hospital with my son, someone assumed he was a couple of months old. And I've seen what I was certain were days-from-the-womb newborns that were in fact six weeks old. So unless you were presented with a copy of the baby's birth certificate you really don't know how new this newborn is.

+1. Now that there's no smoking, I take my kids to bars all the time, to meet up with friends who are also bringing their kids. And no one has been arrested.

Not in DC. My child has been in almost every hip bar downtown, starting from about a week old. I didn't let anyone other than 2 or 3 relatives touch her though until she was six weeks old. You brought your kid to a place that served food AND liquor. You cannot bring a minor inside ANY establishment that predominately sells liquor. It is illegal in every state.

Don't believe me, bring your child to a pub and see what happens. You will be arrested for child abuse. Go ahead, bring your baby to a BAR. I doubt they let you in.

I see people bring kids in the liquor store so I doubt this is true.

I have on more than one occasion and in a couple of states and I have never been arrested or even given a second glance. So unless you show me some evidence otherwise I think you are talking out of your ass.

I took my kid to a bar when he was a week old. What's the big deal? I had family over and we all wanted celebrate with drinks.

I had my one month old on a 4 hour plane ride and back when she was born in December. We stayed in a hotel for two weeks while looking for a house. We had her all over the place because we were in the midst of a major relocation, ie target, u-haul, storage places, etc. It was snowing a lot and really cold. She never got sick even once. Not to mention we were first time parents and my husband was horrible about keeping her bundled up. She's four years old now and rarely gets sick. I believe taking her out so much may have actually made her immune system super strong. Some kids get sick easily and sometimes it's just bad luck that a person catches something and another one doesn't.

As for Op, you really need to stop being so nosy. Not everyone has the same belief about sitting in the house with a baby.

I live in Chicago -- in the city in a neighborhood with tons of young families. My neighborhood bars/pubs are filled with families with babies, toddlers, and preschoolers having dinner all (looooong and freezing!!!!) winter long. That includes even tiny infants peacefully snoozing in their carseats wrapped in cozy layers. From 5ish to 6ish there are more tables with babies and kids than not. Our favorite local bar has a kids menu, straw cups, and brings out crayons. Of course it's not illegal to bring kids to bars. What silliness.

I personally would not pass a newborn around a group in any setting -- my home, a bar, whatever, but that is a totally different issue. I also would not have the energy to care if other parents chose to do otherwise.

My BFFs baby weighs less than my guy did at birth and she's 9 weeks old. OP, you have no idea b/c you need to MYOB!

My baby would have loved the background noise, would probably have happily slept through the whole thing.

we took our baby to HHs a few times to introduce him to our friends-- we can't do that anymore since he has a bedtime now, but babies are easy to drag around!

we also took our baby (gasp!) camping at 6 weeks old in the cold.. it reached 47 that night.

FWIW, I am in my 40's and have taken my infant to a bar. My cousin happens to own one and we meet up with various family members there. There isn't any smoking and it is the best way I can meet up with my cousin (since he is usually working). I am not considered a hipster. Just someone who values family. What is the big deal???
