FWIW - I am a teacher, my mom's a teacher as is my aunt, female cousin (a principal) and all my sisters. We all send thank you cards.

I teach in a Title One school so I rarely get gifts. I did get one today and quickly wrote a thank you note before I forgot. If I worked in a school where all or most of my students gave me gifts, I would write notes over break.

Well, look at it this way, the teacher could put on a movie or some other type of busy work for your kid, while she sits down and writes "thank you notes." Or, she could do what she is paid to do: teach.

No, not new money. Was raised with manners, though. Not really an 'expectation' when one writes a hand-written thank you note for a rather nice gift. Manners, not expectations. Difference.
