The only thing that will seriously reduce future incidents would be the sight of the Virginia Phi Psi rape suspects in handcuffs. Arrest them during Monday Night Football to really get the message across. Detain those privileged hell raisers (all white, not a Black one in the 2012 pledge class) to a place where they have to share a shower with the Hanna Graham murder suspect until they make bail. THAT will send a message that society does not support them. If the UVA rapists are not indicted now after all this publicity (or worse, if they are allowed to surrender in suits and ties accompanied by daddy’s lawyers) then tomorrow’s rapists (who are paying attention to the silent signals the grown ups send on this) will see correctly that they can get away with it, too.

I certainly wish I had had someone in my corner, encouraging me to do just that when I was raped as a sophomore in college. Then perhaps the man who raped me would be behind bars today. You people are idiots if you think things will magically get better without reporting of these crimes. They won't and they haven't because there is no deterrent. Rapists are counting on their victims not coming forward. Nothing will change until women start reporting rape, period. I live every day with regret that I didn't.

The PPs who have made the most sense are those who are advocating real help for victims: urging them to report the rape immediately and gather evidence so as to convict the perps and prevent it from happening again. You want to paint it as if anyone encouraging rape reporting must be somehow blaming the victim???? You're making no sense whatsoever, just talking bloody nonsense. If you truly wanted to help rape victims, you would STFU with your stupid platitudes and cliches and advocate getting real help for rape victims. My friends and I are part of ALL Women and have not had to deal with the systematic oppression of rape culture as you choose to call it. Catcalled, groped and harassed at work, all of us? Sounds like someone takes herself way too seriously. I truly feel for you if you have been raped -- no woman should have to go through that ever -- but equating this other juvenile male nonsense that most of us manage to ignore with rape, is just silly.


Are you truly unable to grasp how a society that has a cavalier attitude towards so called 'juvenile' things like groping a woman might also have a cavalier attitude to rape? Is it not possible that people who do things like grope an unwilling person might graduate to rape?

If you are a woman, you should truly be so ashamed. It is not "juvenile male nonsense" when women are feeling threatened- that is much more serious. If you really dont take it seriously or haven't faced it yourself, fine (although I find that hard to believe). But respect that many, many other women have felt threatened and it has affected their ability to go about their day to day lives and respect that that needs to change.
