No one actually things greatschools or usnews rankins are worthwhile or takes them seriously. It's not like people consult them when making home-buying decisions. You'd have to be monumentally stupid to do that.
Saying this repeatedly doesn't make it so. W-L's average ratings and scores are a hurdle. They aren't necessarily an insurmountable hurdle, but they give some people pause. Calling them "stupid" makes you look delusional.

On the other hand you can consider it the 2nd best high school in arlington!
It's the kid, not the school. Your kid could go to the 'best' (like it exists) public HS in the world and mine will still do better in life.
They have the looks and athleticism as well as the high IQ.
Okay, folks lets make this clear - boasting about where you went to HS or how much money you have, or where your kid goes to HS is low class. But boasting about your kids looks is creepy.
And it's perfect because the nerds can't stand it when a good-looking kid is also has smart as their genius.
Trust me- the people boasting about their HS academics didn't win the jackpot in the looks or athletic gene pool.
Most nerds are too busy reading about their favorite nerdy topic to care. You however, are a "piece of work".
If you are rich with good looking smart kids, its very odd that someone boasting (vulgarly, I might add) about where they went to school bothers you.
It's Hollywood for ugly people here, folks.

HOLY CRAP! This is OP! I got busy and just returned to this thread- haven't read past page 1 yet and shocked there are so many pages when I opened up the site again.
I should say that my daycare is just over the 22207 border I guess from Washington Lee. I love their pool too BTW- have been swimming laps there since well before I had kids and even thought about schools.
I guess I just notice that it seems like a school with good/average/could be from anywhere HS kids around it and wondered what was up. Time to read the responses now I suppose.

Also, all bets are off with overcrowding. That affects all of the high schools.

+1 but switch Yorktown for W-L. We're in the W-L zone because DH bought our house when he was single and wanted to be close to metro. At times we considered trading metro proximity for a larger house farther north but were very happy with our neighborhood and schools, and then I started taking metro to work, so we stayed and renovated.
I'd have been fine with my kids at either school and since our church mostly splits between them they'll have friends at both. I've known great kids at both schools and the parents I know have been similarly happy with their experiences. It really doesn't matter!

W-L students and families too lazy to explore better alternatives, and a legacy of when W-L was under-enrolled and solicited transfers.
And so the corollary would be that Yorktown parents are very motivated to explore better alternatives?
The social scene can be somewhat intense at Yorktown from what I hear. Some kids can't deal with that.
OTOH the argument that rich but dumb kids need a higher SES school is fascinating.
