We are talking about mom vans, commuter rides, etc. not exactly the most interesting cars and the car equivalent of underwear

Subject: How often do you replace a car?
10 years or 150k miles. Problem is that our cars are the same age right now and both need replaced. Currently we have an 05 and an 06. It would be better if their ages were spaced out. My car isn't trying to impress anyone so as long as it's super comfortable and I love it, I'm not getting a new one.

My car just passed 10 years and has about 114k miles. I will drive it until I start facing repair issues on a frequent basis and they make me worry about whether the car is reliable.
Hard to say when that is -- last car was just under 100k miles (don't remember how old it was), before that the last one went over 150k.

We have had my Toyota sienna van for almost 15 years. We bought it the week my son was born so I will always know the age of my car. I have almost 150k miles on it. Just recently my husband and I have discussed possibly getting me a new car. We might keep the van for the kids as my son is about old enough to get a learners permit. Little things have had to be repaired here and there and it’s starting to add up. That said, all my repairs do not add up to an annual car payment. The car is still reliable to get from point a to point B. Once I am not comfortable that it can get me to my destination, I will definitely get a new car. That’s my gold standard.

No. Some people think of cars as a way of going from point A to point B. Completely utilitarian. As long as it runs and does not break down, I don't care.

I have a 1997 Honda Civic with 250K+ miles on it. It runs fine. No issues at all. I think it is going to outlive me. I threaten my 11 yr old that he will get the car once he gets a driver's license: He screams. He is a car person.
That said we are picking up our new Tesla Model S P100D on Sunday. Paid cash.
We are keeping the Civic. It is a family heirloom at this point.

I just sold my 12 year old Infinity with about 120,000 miles. I bought a nice MB coming off a three year lease with less than 20,000 miles for about $35,000 with an extended warranty and two years of free maintenance. I also had a used Jag XK for 15 years which I loved and while it had low mileage it was beginning to have more problems than I wanted to deal with. My wife generally keeps cars for 7-8 years.

I drive my cars until they won't go any further. Then, and ONLY then, I buy a new one.
For example, I bought a used Forester in August after our 2005 Outback (bought new) finally threw in the towel. Before that, we drove our used 1996 Accord into the ground.

We drive ours until a repair bill exceeds the blue book value. But then we are definitely not car people. They are utilitarian only.

About every 4-5 years. I drive a lot (18k-20k/year) so at the 5 year mark when I hit 100k, I trade it. I pay all cars off in 4 years and use the 5th year to save for a down payment. Between that and having decent trade value, I keep payments low (well, that and I don't drive fancy cars!)

I am 50 and just got my third car. Last one lasted 17 years (low mileage). We keep them till they are not reliable..no set time frame. DH drives more. He has a 2010 right now and I assume we will replace it in the next few years.
